Would anyone be up for flash fiction challenges? It's not a full story, though you could always use it for a story. Flash fiction is written on the spot and is typically 1-2 pages long (though you aren't bound to that), but it is based on a small description. Flash fiction is essentially a fun writing exercise that can be used to move you beyond any writer's block.
Here are two examples.
Example 1. Write a piece that is strictly dialogue between two characters - no description, no setup. How can you characterize people by what they say? Can you create narrative tension simply through dialogue?
Example 2. Write a story in the form of a single letter from one character to another, asking for help. How can you imply the backstory without exposition? How can you show character change in letter form? How can you conclude the letter with an ending that allows the reader to fill in what happens next?
If we have some interested people, we should start some flash fiction challenges. Tag in the subject line as (ffc).
